Couvrant une période de 15 ans, l'histoire commence en 1939, alors que J.D. Salinger peine à trouver sa voix. Il s'inscrit à un cours d'écriture à l'université Columbia, entretient une liaison avec la célèbre mondaine Oona O'Neill et parvient finalement à publier une nouvelle. Ce qui s'annonce comme un avenir radieux est retardé par la Seconde Guerre mondiale, à laquelle il doit participer. Son expérience lui inspire cependant son chef-d'oeuvre de 1951 The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger connaît alors la gloire, mais se retirera de la vie publique pour le reste de sa vie.
